The girls in Year 9 were treated to a stunning start to their first History topic of the year this week. Visiting the iconic Wimbledon Theatre to watch a matinee performance of Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse, they were catapulted into their study of World War One.
A breathtaking setting, mesmerising special effects and moving plot ensured a captivated audience.
Having studied ‘Private Peacful’ in English in Year 8, the girls were, at least, a little prepared for the moving and heartrending storyline.
The evocative acting and emotive characterisation brought to life the historical realities and conditions of life during WWI. From the challenges of fighting in the trenches to leaving loved ones behind at home, the close bonds formed amongst the soldiers – whether human or horse – was heart-warmingly evident. Not a dry eye was to be seen as Joey was finally reunited with Albert in the final scenes.
A wonderful start to the many trips to be embarked on by the History Department this year – a special thanks to Mrs Best for a wonderful afternoon.
