A Level Geography Field Trip to Devon 2025

Y12 Geog Fieldtrip Feb 2025

We arrived in Devon late on Sunday afternoon, and we went out and explored the small town of Slapton which is where the Field Studies Centre was located. We walked around the village and learnt some facts about the area and its history, also the impacts of second home owners on the local economy. In the evening, we went out onto the beach and roasted marshmallows on a campfire. Despite the strong wind we managed to get a fire going!

Our Monday started with a drive along the coastline where we were dropped off at Start Bay. From there we spent the main part of the day walking 8km along the coastline back to Slapton. Along the way we stopped at Hallsands, Beasands and Torcross, looking at the different coastal processes and managements at different points. During our walk, we also came across a tank memorial and tribute to the efforts of Ken Small. On our return, before dinner, we recapped our walk and carried out some sediment sifting. We ended the day with a very competitive geographical quiz!

On Tuesday, we travelled to Totnes. Once we arrived, we began our visit by carrying out a series of surveys, which helped us observe and analyse the behaviours and habits of the people in the area. As we walked around Totnes, we took time to reflect on the town’s rich history and how it has evolved over time. We discussed the cultural and historical significance of the place, considering how past events, architecture, and traditions have shaped the community today. This reflection allowed us to appreciate the unique atmosphere of Totnes and the way it blends the old with the new. We also spent time thinking about the “lived memory” of the area, which is the way the town’s residents and visitors remember and experience it. We discussed how these memories shape a community’s identity and how places like Totnes hold sentimental value for people who have lived there or visited over the years.

After a day full of exploration, surveys, and reflection, we gathered together to return to school. Our driver, Elvis, ensured a safe and comfortable journey back.

Thank you to Mrs Griffiths and Mrs Cassell for arranging and accompanying us!
