This February half-term, I had the opportunity to visit my family in Paris and experience something truly special—the newly restored Notre-Dame Cathedral. After a devastating fire in April 2019 that destroyed its spire and roof, this iconic landmark has finally reopened its doors, standing once again as a symbol of resilience, faith, and cultural heritage.
The grand reopening on the 8th December 2024 was a historic moment, attended by dignitaries including French President Emmanuel Macron. In its first month alone, an astonishing 80,000 visitors stepped inside to admire the breathtaking restoration work. Seeing the cathedral restored to its former glory was a powerful reminder of how communities can come together in times of adversity, determined to rebuild what was lost.
For us, Notre-Dame holds an even deeper connection. Both our school and the Parisian cathedral are dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and in our daily prayers, we often recite the Hail Mary, honouring her guidance and protection. Whether in English or French, this prayer unites us, fostering reflection and faith:
Hail Mary (English):
Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee;
blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.
Amen.
As we celebrate Notre-Dame’s revival, we are reminded of the strength that faith and perseverance bring. Just as the cathedral has risen from the ashes, we too can overcome challenges, supporting one another and upholding the values of our school community.
Visiting Notre-Dame was a truly inspiring experience, and I hope its story continues to remind us all of the power of unity, hope, and renewal.
