Spanish Corner – La Música Española

Whilst currently learning about the influence of idols in Year 12, we have also been learning about different Spanish music artists, so today I wanted to highlight the rise of Hispanic music!

Starting in the 18th century, Spain’s musical identity began to transform from classical music to folk and popular music. Flamenco, Fandango, Jota, and Sardana music all have their origins in this time period. However, as of the last 10 years, Latin music has become much more present globally, so much so that Latin music is one of the biggest genres of music on the planet.

With its rhythmic diversity and dance-centric nature, it’s proven popular on TikTok and other social media. Also fueled by the explosive popularity of genres like Reggaeton, Latin Pop, and Regional Mexican music. Artists such as Bad Bunny, Rosalía, J Balvin, and Karol G have achieved international success by blending traditional Latin sounds with modern influences, creating a unique and infectious sound that resonates worldwide.

The rocket in popularity for Latin music is mainly due to immigration and globalization.  Historically, the United States and Britain have had control over the music industry, but the internet and technology has allowed for diversification and local music to become more prominent throughout the world, leading to a dramatic rise in Spanish music.
