Prep Science Corner April 3rd

Prep Science Corner - British Science Week 2025

Celebrating Our Science Project Winners!

During assembly, we proudly announced the winners and runners-up of our Science Project Exhibition! Every girl who submitted a project was awarded a certificate and five house points for their hard work and creativity. The projects were wonderfully diverse, covering topics from animal and plant adaptations to changing human behaviour, making biodegradable plastic and solar ovens, and even calculating our own carbon footprint. A huge well done to all our young scientists!

All of the projects can be seen on Firefly by clicking on the link below:

Easter Egg Natural Dyeing – A Beautiful Tradition

Year 5 Eggs Dyeing

This week, we embraced an old tradition by dyeing real eggs using onion peels, herbs, and thread to create stunning natural patterns. The eggs were carefully wrapped with herbs, secured with thread, and then boiled in onion skin dye to reveal beautiful, unique designs.

The Science Behind Natural Dyeing

Onion skins contain flavonoids, such as quercetin, which act as natural pigments. When boiled, these compounds dissolve into the water and bond with the eggshell’s calcium carbonate, creating a rich, warm colour. The wrapped herbs block the dye in certain areas, leaving behind intricate, nature-inspired patterns. A wonderful way to celebrate Easter while exploring the science of natural dyes!

Year 6 Microorganisms

Year 6 put scientific thinking to the test by investigating whether yeast is a living organism.

Y6 Microorganisms

Using yeast, sugar, and balloons, they observed how the yeast produced carbon dioxide, inflating the balloons as it fed on the sugar.

This exciting experiment demonstrated that yeast is indeed alive—it respires, just like all living things!

Year 5 Explore The Chaos of Chemistry

Year 5 wrapped up British Science Month with an exciting chemical reaction experiment!

Prep Science Corner - British Science Week 2025 Y5

The girls explored the chaos of chemistry by mixing bicarbonate of soda and vinegar, creating mini explosions of fizz and foam. This classic reaction, caused by the release of carbon dioxide gas, was the perfect way to end our celebrations—with a bang!
