Browns Best New Books for Sep 2024

Every month we carefully select our favourites from the fabulous new titles on offer. There is something special about September; the summer may be drawing to a close and the evenings getting longer but the excitement of new stationery (even if you are no longer studying), the changing colours in nature and thinking about wearing your favourite jumper can induce a warm glow on even a gloomy, chilly day.

Black History for Every Day of the Year

Black History for Every Day of the Year

This wonderful new book by award-winning historian and broadcaster David Olusoga and his siblings Yinka Olusoga and Kemi Olusoga presents black history in bite-size pieces with one for every day of the year. This brilliant book introduces us to key figures, some well-known and others unsung heroes and forgotten stories as well as key cultural moments. From the anti-slavery movement to the Black contribution in both World Wars and through to modern icons like Beyonce and Stormzy, this fantastic history has tales of resistance, hope, creativity and celebration.

As Silver settles into life at the rescue centre under the blazing tropical sun she even witnesses a rare leatherback turtle on the beach! But when the turtle’s eggs are stolen, Silver and her new friends must undertake a dangerous journey into the heart of the jungle to track down the missing eggs before it’s too late…

In the Senior Library we are introducing a new scheme whereby staff book recommendation flashcards will be placed next to the books on the shelves and this will hopefully promote wider reading and discussion.
