Last Saturday five pupils from ND were selected to represent North-East Surrey at the Surrey Schools’ Athletics Championships at Kingsmeadow Stadium in Kingston. All the girls performed well and were competing against the very best in Surrey. Poppy O (Year 8) was competing in the Junior Girls 1500m and came 12th with a time of 5:21; Michelle E (Year 9) was an excellent 3rd in the Junior Girls Shot Put, her best throw being 9.80m; Julia M (Year 9) was 5th in the Inter-Girls 1500m with a time of 5:25; both Ciara S (Year 11) and Carmen R (Year 11) were in the Inter-Girls High Jump, Ciara was 10th with her best jump being 1.40m and Carmen won the event with a clearance at 1.65m and became Surrey champion. Unfortunately Zarina K (Year 9) had to pull out just before the Junior Girls 800m with a knee injury.

Congratulation to all the girls on their selection and performance.

Hockey Trip to Lee Valley

Lee Valley Hockey Trip June 2024
Lee Valley Hockey Trip June 2024

We had a great trip taking 90 girls from year 6 through to year 10 over to Lee Valley Hockey Centre at the Olympic park. Upon arrival we made it in to our seats and just before we could get comfy out ran the Spanish Men’s team followed by the GB team. This game was a very close game but some very quick hands in the circle late on meant that we saw GB take all 3 points with a 2-1 win. The girls rushed round and were able to meet the players after the game and have their photos and collect autographs.

For the GB women’s game we surprised 3 of the girls, Sadie, Poppy and Charis with being mascots for the game, so off they went into the tunnel to meet the rest of the men’s squad and the women’s team. Poppy ran out with Lily Owsley, Sadie with Anna Toman and Charis with Fiona Crackles. The girls stood proudly in the middle of the pitch smiles beaming from ear to ear and did our music department proud with their singing of the national anthem. Back to our seats for the game and what a game we had! GB set the crowd alight with a goal in the first 5 mins, and then extended the lead to 2-0 just before the half time whistle. In the second half China started to come back and going into the last quarter it was 2-1. Final quarter early on GB gained the 2 goal difference with a goal from Watson and then China decided to take their keeper off and play with 11 outfielders which was a new tactic for a number of our girls to understand. It paid off, with the extra pressure China were able to draw the game at 3-3. This meant the game went to a shootout, again very new for some of our girls. Pritchard in goal showed how its done for our keepers saving 4 of China’s attempts and GB won 2-1!

Again the girls were able to meet the GB squad for photos and autographs.

We then stayed to watch the next two matches who were both Germany v Australia in both genders where both games were 3-2, the men’s Australian team were victorious and the women’s Germany team were. For both of these games a number of our girls were selected to go on the pitch and be flag bearers, other than very soggy knees, they had a great time being front and centre.

To top the day off Charis had missed getting a photo with Crackles who she was mascot with, so we dropped her a message and she ‘Face Timed’ to have a great conversation with how the game went and where Charis is playing her hockey, a real inspiration.

Quick walk back to the bus and all loaded up we had some very tired girls back for a quiet drive back to school.

All of the photos can be seen on Firefly by clicking the link at the bottom of the sports news.
